Wireless Internet Router Security for everyone else.
Top 5 methods to secure your wireless internet router
1. Do not broadcast your SSID - Change the SSID and turn off SSID broadcasting. This prevents unknown passer by people from detecting and connecting to your network.
2. Utilize WEP or preferably WPA encryption - This helps prevent traffic sniffers from reading your traffic in clear text. If it is encrypted the chances are they will not even bother.
3. Turn off DCHP and use static addressing - This prevents your wireless router from giving out its IP address and the IP address scheme of your home network to unknown network intruders.
4. Utilize Mac-Address filtering - Each wireless network card and ethernet card has it’s own unique Mac-Address this address is assigned at the factory. You can allow only your specific mac-addresses and this will filter all others from accessing your wireless network.
5. Password protect the administration page - Most all wireless network routers come with a default administration password of wither “admin” or “password” you should take a minimum precaution of changing this to a complex password or anyone could access your wireless router administration security page remotely and change your security settings.
Recently I took a drive through my town and neighborhood and was able to find open, non-secured wireless networks on just about every block; I could easily get on the internet with any one of the wireless routers directly from my car. I live in rural West Virginia and we are about 10 years behind all of the other big city’s out there. So if it is a problem where I live, I know it is a problem where you live. This is called war driving and it is something that most technically savvy people know about. “Why set up Wireless Internet Security?”
“Why would I set up wireless network security on your home network”, you may ask. The answer is very plain, because it is easy and wireless router security protects your information. Read on and I will help by explaining information security in terms most of us middle ager’s can relate to.
Back in the day…
Some of you may remember the days when you had to share your telephone on a party line. For those of you who never had the pleasure of doing this, a party line is when you would pick up the phone and any one of your neighbors could be talking at the same time that you wanted to make a call. It may be neighbor Smith talking to sister Fencepost, about what Sally said at church last Sunday, and you have to make an important call. Well, at this point you would politely ask them if you could make an important phone call, well, some of us would have been polite. You could then make your call but you never did know who was listening in and you may often hear a click or two, and wonder who just heard you tell the Bank officer that you were going to be late on your house payment again.
Now this is a problem, you don’t want the neighborhood gossipers knowing about your personal problems and making your life even worse. Also, lets say that down the road there is one of the neighbors teen age children, who has sticky fingers and is always stealing things when you have your back turned. Well, he just picked up the phone and heard you give your Bank Account number and Social Security number over the phone and he is quickly thinking of how he could use this information to order that new toy he has been dreaming that he could get somehow.
You may say “that cannot happen to me”, well think again, it is all over the news each and every day how people are not only after your bank account that, (a.) may not have nothing in it worth stealing but, (b.) they are after your identity that can be stolen with just a Drivers License number and a Social Security number and home address; then apply for credit items that may cause you to be liable for hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

We all want and like to have convenience, admit it we want what we want and we want it now! So, in order to have convenience and high speed internet anywhere we go in the house or yard we go to the local office supply or electronics store, maybe even to the local department store since the price is cheaper there and we purchase a wireless internet router.

Technology doesn’t have nothing on you right?….. Well… Almost nothing. Remember the little scenario about the party line?
Your wireless router has just become the latest party line for all of your neighbors to the internet. As simple as you connected, they will connect to your internet just as easy. And little Johnny right down the street who has a ton more time than a working parent, with 3 kids, a full time job, and church responsibilities, has just detected your new network and is currently setting up his network sniffer to capture and filter everything you do.Wait! a minute! Don’t give up and take your router back or throw your wireless router away. You can secure your wireless router very easily. The straight answer is no! Once you have set up your wireless network and then secure the connection between your computer and the router; you simply leave it alone. This does not require you to change anything each day, week, or month, it will not stop your programs from working on your PC; it merely secures the connection from your neighbors and passers by that may be looking for ‘open’ or unsecured wireless networks.
